The Castway volunteers involved
in the actual rescue and rehabilitation of dogs and cats sometimes see neglect
and cruelty at the extreme. While we always try to focus our stories on the
postitive aspects of rescue there are heartbreaks for us along the way.
Recently we rescued several animals suffering extreme neglect and starvation.
While there is good news and joyful recovery, the heartbreak is there
also.
The hound
was just bones with skin draped over. She was found wandering the roads, a
young dog with her that was obviously a pal she picked up along the way. The
pup was in good shape but the hound was only days from a miserable death by
starvation. After vetting, we learned she had no contributing health issues to
explain her condition. She was simply the victim of
neglect.
Two kittens
were taken in that were in skeletal condition. They were about 7 weeks old and
literally 'light as a feather'. Obviously brothers and dependent on each other,
both were put in a foster home and tended to constantly. They were named
ChowChow and DinDin because that's what they wanted and needed. Sadly, after a
week, DinDin died. He was literally a skeleton. ChowChow has survived but his
progress is slow and it may take months to bring him back to a state of health.
These
animals endured terrible suffering and many more are out there, unwanted and
neglected; thrown away like trash. We are only able to save a few of the many
anonymous dogs and cats, puppies and kittens but each one saved is now a valued
life to be loved and cared for. You contributions make this possible!
Hopefully we will have 'after' pictures of these two survivors with happily
ever-after stories, thanks to the many supporters of Castaway
Critters.
