Less Adoptable Pets Week - Meet Snuggles

Snuggles came from an abuse/neglect situation. He was in a filthy cage with another cat living in their own waste. They were lucky, however, and were rescued. He was so dirty that he had to be shaved. He was very afraid of people when he arrived, but has learned that with love and care, he does not need to be scared. Snuggles now enjoys being petted and is happy to have a comfy spot to nap. He is a very special cat that would love to know what a loving home would be like.

Help! My Dog is Missing!

Chica PoohAnother way that CCPR helps the community is to network when we learn of a missing or found pet.  Almost daily our volunteers receive emails, calls and see social media posts and immediately spring into action. Information is distributed to everyone on our regular email list (which is different than the newsletter list), who in turn forwards and shares the information with everyone in their reach. In this way we have been successful in reuniting pets with their owners.

For example, in early August a homeless Chihuahua was saved from being run over by a car. Good Samaritans scooped her up and contacted us. Her medical exam estimated her age to be between 9-12 years old, plus she had some health issues. A generous donor agreed to pay for her medical bills and then another family stepped up willing to take her in permanently. Throughout all of this, her information was being shared on our Facebook page and eventually it funneled back to her original owners. We learned that Chica Pooh had gotten out of her collar when walking on a leash visiting friends two months before! Chica Pooh ran to her family when they were reunited and there wasn't a dry eye in the room.

However, often times there isn't a happy ending. The sad truth is that many dogs don't have collars, identification tags, or microchips. And you probably know that almost all cats have no form of identification at all. In these cases, the only way to find their homes is to network, network, network.

Here's a link to an informative article called What to Do if Your Dog Goes Missing that covers most of the bases. We would like to suggest one major addition to this list: and that's to post the information on Facebook or other social media sites you use. Even if you don't personally use social media, find someone who does and enlist their help.

A Special Thank You

Castaway Critters Pet Rescue wants to send a special "Thank You" to the Bob and Carol Spector Foundation for Animal Welfare and Judiac Studies for awarding us four grants during 2012 in the amount of $2000 each. Their funds have provided for the care and comfort of all of our animals at a time when donations continue to dwindle. We've been fortunate enough to continue renovations on the dog kennels; we did a major overhaul of the cat house; we've funded many, many spays and neuters; and purchased much-needed flea treatments. This foundation has been supportive of us for several years and we are sincerely grateful for their generosity.

Cat of the Month: Nala

Meet our Cat of the Month: Nala is a large torti girl who just loves people.  She is very good with kittens and would do well if adopted with one of our youngsters.  Nala has a lot of love to give and would make an excellent lap cat.  She is very well mannered.

As our featured Pets of the Month, adoption fees are half the normal amount. However, if you don't have room for another kitty or doggie and would like to sponsor instead, please call 706-781-3992 or email for more information.

Dog of the Month: Wolfy

Wolfy is a 10-year-old male husky mix who was surrendered by his previous owners when a CCPR worker rescued him from a chain that was attached to a tree for 3 years. Wolfy is an amazing, loyal, obedient companion that deserved more then what he was dealt. He was brought to the shelter in search of a new life, a new family, and a forever home.

Wolfy is a smart and quick learner! In the foster home that he was at for a short period of time, he learned to communicate the "potty".  He will tell you when he needs to go outside and after a short time to play he will then let you know it's time to go inside. The only time Wolfy has ever barked indoors is when the usual happens...mailman, garbage man, or strangers at the door. He is wonderful with other dogs big and small. Even though he would make a great family member, he is better off with older kids and adults.

Wolfy loves to play early in the morning and late afternoons. In between those times, his favorite thing to do is lie on the front porch and watch life go by. He would also like a long brisk walk down your favorite nature trail. Two if you're feeling frisky. He will welcome the challenge. Wolfy is not an apartment dog and would love to have a fenced yard and a cool place to lounge.

Wolfy wants nothing more than someone to love him, talk to him with kind words, and spend alone time together. He has waited so long, with the same dream, that one day he can find a family that will love him and provide for him. The only thing he doesn't have yet...a forever home.

Wolfy is current on all vaccinations and is neutered, heartworm negative, and in great spirits.

Strut Your Mutt Across America!

The Strut Your Mutt Across America event is still going strong and currently we are in 2nd place out of 83 teams! CCPR has a Dog Pack of volunteers raising funds to help reduce the number of unaltered animals in Blairsville, GA and the surrounding communities. Our Healthy Kitten / Healthy Puppy project has been a great success and the funds donated will ensure it continues. Please visit our Dog Pack page and make a donation to one of our team members -- all of the money goes to the same place -- before September 22nd. Thank you!

A Brief History & Accomplishments of CCPR

Castaway Critters: A Brief History and Our Accomplishments

In 2005, Castaway Critters Pet Rescue (CCPR) came into being through the fostering efforts of four long-time pet rescue advocates.  Two of the original founders, Shannon Elliott and June Young, are current board members.

·        December 2006: CCPR incorporates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit private shelter.
·        2006 – 2009: CCPR’s association with Saving Shelter Pets results in the transport of over 500 puppies and dogs to no-kill facilities in the Northeast.
·        2006 – Present: CCPR maintains adoption sites at PetSmart and PetCo.
·        February 2007: CCPR moves into its stand-alone shelter.
·        August 2009: With a discarded ’02 road department van, CCPR begins monthly transports of companion animals to Eleventh Hour Pet Rescue in Rockaway, NJ.  This effort saves many adoptable animals from certain death in animal control facilities.
·        May 2010: CCPR begins a food bank, using donated pet food, to help pet owners of limited means to keep their animals at home.
·        July 2011: CCPR begins a monthly e-newsletter that updates recent adoptions, spotlights an unusual rescue and educates readers about the many aspects of responsible pet ownership.
·        July 2011: CCPR introduces its Healthy Kitten/Healthy Puppy vetting program to assist people of limited financial means in our community.
·        December 2011: CCPR sets a personal best of over 500 rescues of dogs and cats in one year.
·        June 2012: CCPR renovates its cattery with new flooring, paint and wall coverings.
·        July 2012: CCPR allies with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, NC, and begins transports of dogs and puppies to this no-kill shelter.
·        July 2012: GA Department of Agriculture conducts an unannounced inspection of our facility; CCPR passes with “flying colors.”  The inspector expresses praise for both the condition of the shelter and the humane treatment our critters receive.

Also, we provide rehabilitation if an animal is injured, training if there is a behavioral problem and sanctuary for animals too ill or aged to prove adoptable.

Castaway’s ongoing educational effort attempts to raise the awareness of the problems associated with unaltered animals in our area through speaking engagements at civic organizations and conversations at adoption sites.

Finally, our website, www.castaway-critters.org, gives an overview as to what we are about and provides pictures of our adoptable pets.
