Socks is a gentle, family friendly cat

Socks is the newest arrival at the shelter. She was a stray and brought in by a very nice family who adopted one of our other kitties, but was not able to keep this female cat. She is a very sedate female with a lovely personality. You can flop her upside down and do anything with her. She would be a great family cat and is so gentle she could be with little children. She plays with toys, she gets along with all the other cats, has perfect manners (won't even get on the counter!), and is fully vetted. Please call 706-781-3992 or email castaway_critters @ hotmail.com if Socks seems like a good fit for your family!

Frisky is shy but very loving

This lovely girl is Frisky, a black Australian Shepherd mix with beautiful eyes. She is about 7 yrs. old. She was left at the shelter by the only family she has ever had. She was very confused and seemed to know she had been abandoned. A foster family saw how sad she was and decided to take her home to meet their dogs so that she might feel better -- well she did! She loves to be with other dogs and gets along very easily with them. When Frisky came to the shelter, her long hair was dirty and matted. She had a visit with a groomer and her fur was shaved off for the summer and now she looks like a Lab. She is very loving, sweet, healthy and smart. She is shy as she may be afraid of being abandoned once again. Frisky very much needs a forever home where she will get lots of attention and another dog friend to play with. A fenced yard would be a must as she loves running and having fun. She is fully vetted and all she needs is someone to love her, care for her and let her know she will never be left again. If you think you are the home for this precious girl, call Barb at 706-745-0035.

A leg injury didn't slow down Brandywine!

Brandywine has a personality that will just melt your heart! Plus, she will entertain you while she plays ball, chases sticks (by the way, she eats them before bringing them back), or runs you down when playing tag. What's amazing is that she was hit by a car that took away the use of her entire back left leg! And what's worse is that her previous owner abandoned her at a local cemetery to survive on her own! But once again, a poor defenseless pet was brought to the attention of Castaway Critters where we welcomed her with open arms. Now Brandywine uses three of her four legs and has learned to keep the injured one tucked up to her belly. Trust me, this does not slow her down as she is very energetic and she can outrun most of the dogs at the rescue! She is great with other dogs and kids, but not with cats. She would make the sweetest addition to any family. She is house-trained and loves to sleep on your bed. Her only requirement is love. Can you make her wishes come true with a forever home? And if you can't, would you consider sponsoring her? Please call 706-781-3992 or email castaway_critters @ hotmail.com either way.

Crescent learned to overcome her injury

This beautiful, loving hound dog is named Crescent. She enjoys every day to the fullest, but it wasn't always enjoyable for this angel. You see, Crescent has an injury that she has learned to overcome. We believe she was hit by a car that damaged her front right leg and has taken the use of her foot. To make it worse, when she needed the help of someone to see her through this tragedy, she was dumped to fend for herself. When all hope seemed to dwindle, Castaway was there! We eagerly swept Crescent up and gave her the care that she needed, and most of all the loving attention she deserved. But we are missing one factor in this whole scenario…you! We are looking for someone to give her a forever home -- or at very least become her sponsor -- so she can continue to progress in her recovery. She can run short distances and throws that bad paw out to help her balance. She is very smart! Crescent holds her own when it comes to playing with other dogs, cats and kids!!! She loves to be told she is beautiful and she shows you loyalty through her eyes. She's willing to please and likes to relax which is easy to do when you're 100% house trained. Please consider this sweet girl!

Momma Jordan is just a kitten herself

Jordan came to us as a drop-off and by the time we finally trapped her she had 4 little tabby kittens. Jordan is very tiny and really just a kitten herself. She is very sweet and loves to be petted. She is also very playful and can entertain herself with a toy for hours. This sweet little girl is spayed, has good manners, is up to date on all shots and is ready for a home - or a sponsor!

Lucy is a Lovely Calico

Lucy is a lovely calico with a lot of white! She is young and sweet and playful. Lucy and her one kitten were rescued from animal control, literally at the last minute. They were about to be euthanized. Her kitten has since been adopted but Lucy has not found a home. She has a lovely disposition and is good with other cats and with dogs. She has perfect manners, is spayed, vaccinated and ready to go - but so far there is no home for her to go to. If you would like to sponsor (or adopt) Lucy call 706-781-3992 or email castaway_critters @ hotmail.com.

Networking to Save Lives

Each of us who are involved in the day-to-day of rescue work knows we cannot save them all; and when we are unable to take in an abandoned cat, we still try to advise and encourage. Every so often we hear of a miraculous turn of events, better than anything we could have managed. August 3rd was such a time. Marge at L & M Furniture called to inform us of a cat left in a carrier in front of her store. While she is highly regarded as a contributor to Castaway, our intake is closed and we could not take the cat. We could only encourage her to try to find someone to be a foster. Marge was not successful and had already called Animal Control when Ameilia Chambers walked into the store. Marge held up the beautiful Maine Coon female and said, jokingly, "Would you like a kitty?" Ameilia's reaction was a complete surprise to Marge; joyful tears at the sight of a cat that looked just like her beloved kitty that had died a month previous. You guessed it! The gorgeous cat was taken to the vet, found to be healthy and spayed, and is now in her new and forever loving home. Castaway Critters really played no part in this miraculous rescue, but we all love a good story!

And here's another one.

CCPR received a call from a very nice woman who was ill and moving to South Georgia but could not take Nelson, her black, long-haired 12-year-old cat. Nelson had been inside only, was good with other cats (his sister recently died), and also with dogs. He was extremely gentle and affectionate. Pat, the woman, had exhausted all possibilities with only days before she had to leave and she did not know what else to do. So the volunteers at Castaway began networking to find a good solution for Pat and Nelson. Lo and behold, June mentioned Nelson to Holly at Anderson's store in Hiawassee. Holly already has a big white long-haired cat and a big black one as store cats. The customers love it. So Holly agreed to take Nelson! He will stay with her at the store and go home with her when the store is closed. It's the perfect ending to yet another good story!

Castaway Kittens in Service!

Once a month, a Castaway kitten makes a very special visit to Chatuge Nursing Home. Doreen and David London, long-time volunteers and benefactors to Castaway Critters, have a special program for the elderly that brings them joy, remembrances of past loved pets, and touching moments.

The kittens are carried in a special pouch that Doreen makes to keep their tiny claws from scratching, and the residents are allowed to hold them and snuggle with them.

David and Doreen have been visiting the home for about 13 years, also providing many activities for the residents including games and crafts. For the past couple of years, a kitten visit has provided a much needed chance to touch and cuddle and pet a living animal. Many of the residents share stories of their own greatly missed pets. Some residents, otherwise unresponsive, will smile when the kitten is placed on their lap, letting you know they are appreciating this special visit.

Science recognizes the health benefits that interacting with an animal can bring to the elderly and the Castaway kittens seem to enjoy those affects just a much!

Logi was left to be euthanized

Logi was my foster baby. Someone had brought him into Dr. C's office and left him to be euthanized. He was probably only 10-12 weeks old at the time and he had some wounds on his back. The people who brought him in were not sure what had happened to him, but they did not want to keep him. Doc took the pup but didn't tell them he would not put the poor little pup down. Then Doc asked if we would be interested in taking him. Of course, I said yes. So Doc cleaned up his wounds and I took him to foster until he found a home.

Logi, now
known as Beamer, is living with these great people who adopted him. They bring him by on occasion to visit and have provided him a wonderful home. He is well trained and a very happy boy.

Ramey - How a car accident totally changed his life!

Ramey, obviously injured, was found in a junkyard in Cleveland, GA by one of our faithful volunteers. The story begins with her words:

Ramey was found in a truck and car junkyard/towing company in Cleveland, GA. My husband and I were there to get a part for our business truck. Ramey was hanging around the front office and was so friendly, but I could see he was injured. I asked the girl working there what happened to him. She said he had been hit by a car and had belonged to a woman who lived down the road. Sadly, the owner did not want him back and would not even take him to the vet! I could see he had surface wounds on his head and one of his eyes was really bad and looked infected. I was heartbroken for him! I went home and sent out an e-mail to all the cat volunteers about him and asked if we could take him into the shelter. June gave me the go ahead, so I immediately called the junkyard and explained I was with CCPR asked if I could come get him. She said yes, so off I went! There was Ramey, as if he were waiting for me. I met June at the vet with him and discovered he was already neutered!!! But his eye was a problem and he had to have it removed soon after his first visit. Ramey was the ladies man in room #2 [at the cat shelter]; all the females seemed to love him. He even had a sweet girlfriend named Buttercup, who got adopted. He was really a sweet guy!!!!

Pam [a CCPR supporter] came to the shelter and met and adopted him!! She can fill you in on the rest of his story:

After Ramey's surgery and talking to Deb about him, we decided we needed a house-cat as our other 6 cats have their own house! He came to live with us and immediately was at home. Tim built him a cat perch that he lays on top of to watch the birds on the porch feeders and also has a lake view. He's a very sweet boy, about 5 years old, and loves to watch TV on the back of Tim's rocking chair with Tim sitting in it...talk about balance. Ramey has internal gastro problems due to being hit by the car and is on special food and medication to control this, and is doing well. We're constantly tweaking his meds depending on what's happening, but he's a good sport. He likes men more than women and especially likes anyone who doesn't care for cats. Once they have him on their lap, however, they soon change their mind! We love him very much!
