Castaway Kittens in Service!

Once a month, a Castaway kitten makes a very special visit to Chatuge Nursing Home. Doreen and David London, long-time volunteers and benefactors to Castaway Critters, have a special program for the elderly that brings them joy, remembrances of past loved pets, and touching moments.

The kittens are carried in a special pouch that Doreen makes to keep their tiny claws from scratching, and the residents are allowed to hold them and snuggle with them.

David and Doreen have been visiting the home for about 13 years, also providing many activities for the residents including games and crafts. For the past couple of years, a kitten visit has provided a much needed chance to touch and cuddle and pet a living animal. Many of the residents share stories of their own greatly missed pets. Some residents, otherwise unresponsive, will smile when the kitten is placed on their lap, letting you know they are appreciating this special visit.

Science recognizes the health benefits that interacting with an animal can bring to the elderly and the Castaway kittens seem to enjoy those affects just a much!
