Dogs of the Month: Casper and Cooper - Brothers and Best Friends

Casper and Cooper were pulled from a high kill shelter when they were just a few weeks old, along with their mother and 7 other siblings.  They are now 1 year and 7 months old. They are housebroken and love each other very much. They get along fine with cats and other dogs.

The foster mom does not want to break them up so if you can welcome these Brothers & Best Friends into your home, we would be forever grateful.

As our featured Pets of the Month, adoption fees are half the normal amount. However, if you don't have room for another kitty or doggie and would like to sponsor instead, please call 706-781-3992 or email for more information.

Cat of the Month: Precious

Meet our Cat of the Month: Precious is mostly white with some loving splashings of black and tabby.  He is medium haired and silky coated.  He has great big eyes and is just gorgeous.  He is very sweet natured, well-mannered, and social with other cats.  Precious and his brother Bandit came to us together but can be adopted seperately.  This big boy would love to be your baby!  If you are looking for a quiet, lovely lap cat, don't miss out on Precious.

As our featured Pets of the Month, adoption fees are half the normal amount. However, if you don't have room for another kitty or doggie and would like to sponsor instead, please call 706-781-3992 or email for more information.

Castaway Critters Pet Rescue awarded $$$$ grant

Castaway Critters Pet Rescue awarded $$$$ grant from
Best Friends Animal Society®, PetSmart Charities®

Grant will support Castaway Critters Pet Rescue’s lifesaving work for homeless pets

Blairsville, GA, October 2012 ─ Best Friends Animal Society® in partnership with PetSmart Charities®  is pleased to announce that Castaway Critters Pet Rescue has been awarded a grant for their transport initiative.

Castaway Critters Pet Rescue is a participating member of the No More Homeless Pets® Network, a program of Best Friends Animal Society, which offers help and support to animal rescue groups that save lives in their communities.

“This grant project definitely targets animals that are most at-risk to be killed and provides an innovated solution to save their lives while working toward the Best Friends mission of No More Homeless Pets,” said Ellen Gilmore, manager of Best Friends’ No More Homeless Pets Network.

Nancy Ede, Secretary of the Board of Directors for Castaway Critters Pet Rescue, said: “This grant means that we can add more dogs from high kill shelters and animal control facilities to our transports north to New Jersey and North Carolina, a big boost to our efforts this year to find forever homes for deserving rescued pets.  Our goal will be to adopt out 400 dogs and cats to loving families. We appreciate the support of Best Friends Animal Society and PetSmart Charities in making our transport initiative possible.”

This lifesaving grant is part of Best Friends Animal Society’s mission of No More Homeless Pets®. Every day, approximately 9,000 pets are killed in shelters because they don’t have a home. Best Friends Animal Society and PetSmart Charities are committed to saving them.

Your great idea could earn you $100 cash!

Castaway Critters Pet Rescue needs to change its name, so the shelter is holding a contest. Between now and November 17, you can suggest a creative new name for the Blairsville no-kill shelter. If your suggestion is chosen, you’ll receive $100 cash and the satisfaction of naming an important organization.

There are two ways to submit a name. You can write your suggestion on a piece of paper (along with your name, contact information, and the date and time) and drop it off at Blairsville Bible, Office, and School Supplies; or you can post your suggestion on Facebook at www.facebook.com/NewNameForCastawayCritters. Just “like” the page, and post your suggestion. You may enter as many suggestions as you want.

The new name must not already be in use by another rescue group. You should do an Internet search of your suggested name before submitting it just to be sure. Also, the name can’t be similar to Castaway Critters (such as Kastaway Kritters, Castaway, Castaway Creatures, etc.). If the winning name is submitted by more than one person, the person who submitted it first will win the $100 and get credit for the name. The Castaway Critters board members will select the winning name.

Castaway Critters Pet Rescue is a private, non-profit rescue shelter in Blairsville. Castaway Critters has been saving dogs and cats since 2006. Now the shelter has to change its name to avoid possible trademark infringement and marketing conflicts with a rescue group in Pennsylvania, which was formed before Castaway Critters Pet Rescue, Inc. in Blairsville, and whose name also contains the words Castaway Critters. The local rescue group will have the same mission as always, just a different name.

The cash prize for this contest was donated by individual Castaway Critters volunteers.

Help! My Dog is Missing!

Chica PoohAnother way that CCPR helps the community is to network when we learn of a missing or found pet.  Almost daily our volunteers receive emails, calls and see social media posts and immediately spring into action. Information is distributed to everyone on our regular email list (which is different than the newsletter list), who in turn forwards and shares the information with everyone in their reach. In this way we have been successful in reuniting pets with their owners.

For example, in early August a homeless Chihuahua was saved from being run over by a car. Good Samaritans scooped her up and contacted us. Her medical exam estimated her age to be between 9-12 years old, plus she had some health issues. A generous donor agreed to pay for her medical bills and then another family stepped up willing to take her in permanently. Throughout all of this, her information was being shared on our Facebook page and eventually it funneled back to her original owners. We learned that Chica Pooh had gotten out of her collar when walking on a leash visiting friends two months before! Chica Pooh ran to her family when they were reunited and there wasn't a dry eye in the room.

However, often times there isn't a happy ending. The sad truth is that many dogs don't have collars, identification tags, or microchips. And you probably know that almost all cats have no form of identification at all. In these cases, the only way to find their homes is to network, network, network.

Here's a link to an informative article called What to Do if Your Dog Goes Missing that covers most of the bases. We would like to suggest one major addition to this list: and that's to post the information on Facebook or other social media sites you use. Even if you don't personally use social media, find someone who does and enlist their help.

A Special Thank You

Castaway Critters Pet Rescue wants to send a special "Thank You" to the Bob and Carol Spector Foundation for Animal Welfare and Judiac Studies for awarding us four grants during 2012 in the amount of $2000 each. Their funds have provided for the care and comfort of all of our animals at a time when donations continue to dwindle. We've been fortunate enough to continue renovations on the dog kennels; we did a major overhaul of the cat house; we've funded many, many spays and neuters; and purchased much-needed flea treatments. This foundation has been supportive of us for several years and we are sincerely grateful for their generosity.

Cat of the Month: Nala

Meet our Cat of the Month: Nala is a large torti girl who just loves people.  She is very good with kittens and would do well if adopted with one of our youngsters.  Nala has a lot of love to give and would make an excellent lap cat.  She is very well mannered.

As our featured Pets of the Month, adoption fees are half the normal amount. However, if you don't have room for another kitty or doggie and would like to sponsor instead, please call 706-781-3992 or email for more information.

Dog of the Month: Wolfy

Wolfy is a 10-year-old male husky mix who was surrendered by his previous owners when a CCPR worker rescued him from a chain that was attached to a tree for 3 years. Wolfy is an amazing, loyal, obedient companion that deserved more then what he was dealt. He was brought to the shelter in search of a new life, a new family, and a forever home.

Wolfy is a smart and quick learner! In the foster home that he was at for a short period of time, he learned to communicate the "potty".  He will tell you when he needs to go outside and after a short time to play he will then let you know it's time to go inside. The only time Wolfy has ever barked indoors is when the usual happens...mailman, garbage man, or strangers at the door. He is wonderful with other dogs big and small. Even though he would make a great family member, he is better off with older kids and adults.

Wolfy loves to play early in the morning and late afternoons. In between those times, his favorite thing to do is lie on the front porch and watch life go by. He would also like a long brisk walk down your favorite nature trail. Two if you're feeling frisky. He will welcome the challenge. Wolfy is not an apartment dog and would love to have a fenced yard and a cool place to lounge.

Wolfy wants nothing more than someone to love him, talk to him with kind words, and spend alone time together. He has waited so long, with the same dream, that one day he can find a family that will love him and provide for him. The only thing he doesn't have yet...a forever home.

Wolfy is current on all vaccinations and is neutered, heartworm negative, and in great spirits.

A Brief History & Accomplishments of CCPR

Castaway Critters: A Brief History and Our Accomplishments

In 2005, Castaway Critters Pet Rescue (CCPR) came into being through the fostering efforts of four long-time pet rescue advocates.  Two of the original founders, Shannon Elliott and June Young, are current board members.

·        December 2006: CCPR incorporates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit private shelter.
·        2006 – 2009: CCPR’s association with Saving Shelter Pets results in the transport of over 500 puppies and dogs to no-kill facilities in the Northeast.
·        2006 – Present: CCPR maintains adoption sites at PetSmart and PetCo.
·        February 2007: CCPR moves into its stand-alone shelter.
·        August 2009: With a discarded ’02 road department van, CCPR begins monthly transports of companion animals to Eleventh Hour Pet Rescue in Rockaway, NJ.  This effort saves many adoptable animals from certain death in animal control facilities.
·        May 2010: CCPR begins a food bank, using donated pet food, to help pet owners of limited means to keep their animals at home.
·        July 2011: CCPR begins a monthly e-newsletter that updates recent adoptions, spotlights an unusual rescue and educates readers about the many aspects of responsible pet ownership.
·        July 2011: CCPR introduces its Healthy Kitten/Healthy Puppy vetting program to assist people of limited financial means in our community.
·        December 2011: CCPR sets a personal best of over 500 rescues of dogs and cats in one year.
·        June 2012: CCPR renovates its cattery with new flooring, paint and wall coverings.
·        July 2012: CCPR allies with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, NC, and begins transports of dogs and puppies to this no-kill shelter.
·        July 2012: GA Department of Agriculture conducts an unannounced inspection of our facility; CCPR passes with “flying colors.”  The inspector expresses praise for both the condition of the shelter and the humane treatment our critters receive.

Also, we provide rehabilitation if an animal is injured, training if there is a behavioral problem and sanctuary for animals too ill or aged to prove adoptable.

Castaway’s ongoing educational effort attempts to raise the awareness of the problems associated with unaltered animals in our area through speaking engagements at civic organizations and conversations at adoption sites.

Finally, our website, www.castaway-critters.org, gives an overview as to what we are about and provides pictures of our adoptable pets.

Harley is Very Ill and Needs A Little Help

Harley was found tied to a fence at a school in Atlanta.  The person who found him called the Fulton County Animal Control, who picked up Harley and took him to the shelter.  The person who found Harley then also told one of our supporters, who helps us with adoptions in Milton/Alpharetta. She showed our supporter pictures of Harley. We used some creative thinking, a little Crisco, and a shoe horn to get Harley into our shelter in Blairsville.  YAY! Harley is safe but his story does not end there.

Harley is extremely sick. He is gasping for air, his lungs are filled with fluid and swollen, his temperature is 105.  He needs to remain in the vet hospital for at least 2 days (if not more) where he is receiving antibiotics and fluids.  We never give up trying to help a dog but we are EXTREMELY short on funds. We have been trying not to ask for help but Harley's recovery will cost much more than we can afford or have so we are not only asking we are begging each of our friends and supporters to donate even $1 because if we add them all together we can make a difference for Harley.

http://castawaycritterspetrescue.chipin.com/harley-the-sick-hound-boxer-mix

Our Paypal address is castawaycrittersrescue@gmail.com

For checks please send them to:

Castaway Critters Pet Rescue, Inc
1732 John Smith Rd E
Blairsville, GA 30512

If everyone would donate at least $1 we would have more than enough to help Harley heal.  Please, he has a family who wants to adopt him but he can not go home to them until he is 100% well.

Castaway Critters Pet Rescue, Inc is a 501(c)3 IRS recognized charity, all donations are 100% tax deductible as allowed by law.   We truly and sincerely appreciate every single donation we receive.

Thank-you!

CHANCE TO WIN A GRANT FOR FENCING

We have a chance to win a grant for fencing for our dogs at the shelter in The Animal Rescue Site's Project for Paws. Project for Paws is part of the of The Animal Rescue Site's $300,000 Shelter+ Challenge — with Petfinder.com

http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/projects-for-paws.faces?siteId=3

We are a small group trying to help as many dogs and cats as we can in our rural Northern Georgia location.  We rely solely on donations to operate our rescue so this grant would not only mean a great deal to us but it would mean a great deal to the dogs in our care because it will give them a place to frolic, play, and run.

Our grant proposal is called Longing for the Old Corral.

We would sincerely and truly appreciate it if you could vote for us, once a day, every day between now and 11:59PM PDT on September 16, 2012. Winners will be announced on Sept 19, 2012

Happy Tales-Zakary and Xavier

A heartwarming story about two pups from Castaway Critters.

I originally went to Castaway Critters to adopt two female puppies: one large and one small.  As I walked around looking for just the right pair, two pups about three or four months old caught my eye.  Both were a beautiful reddish brown with a little black and one had a pointed face and the other had a square face. Each would his brother’s movements exactly. They stayed as close to one another as possible.
It was hard to tell how big they would be: one had large paws for his age and size.  I sent a couple of pictures to my husband’s phone and went home, not finding the lap dog and the guard dog I was looking for.  That evening my husband, my granddaughter and I looked at the pictures and discussed this inseparable pair.  It was unanimous; we had to have these two BROTHERS.  We could not choose between them and they were too attached to separate.
The next day we went and picked them up.  That was September 9, 2009.  Zakary and Xavier were now part of our family and neither the dogs nor us could be happier. We knew we did the right thing not separating them when earlier this year Zakary had to have surgery on his stomach.  Xavier cried for an hour and a half, standing by the door in which his brother had gone and that night there was no sleeping in their crate: he had to sleep right in between my husband and myself.  Xavier was one happy dog the next day when Zakary came home and he stayed right by his side without laying partially on top of him as they usually do; he knew his brother was hurting.
These two boys are the most compassionate creatures I have ever seen, and my family and I could not imagine spending our days without them; they have wedged their way into our hearts and our family and have brought us all closer than we had been for a long time.

Helpless Unwanted Little Ones

Recently we have been able to get several litters of puppies out of unhealthy or dangerous situations and secure them until we can transport them to Brother Wolf.  We sent one litter already and Tuesday will be sending some more.  Today June and I went out and took pics of 9 puppies running at large near a road.  One has already been run over.  We will be getting the remaining pups into a safe enclosure early this week.  We have another litter of 6 3-week old puppies scheduled to go when they are old enough.  Here's a pic of some of the pups today. It would be nice for people to know we are 'out there' rescuing these helpless unwanted little ones and getting them into forever homes.

Continued Care for Your Pets

Recently CCPR experienced another emergency situation where several senior cats had to be re-homed without delay. This unfortunate story began when we got word that a local woman was nearing the end of her fight against cancer, and she desperately wanted her 6 beloved but older kitties to go to new forever homes and not to a shelter where they might be euthanized because of their age. Immediately we began reaching out to our network of volunteers, supporters, friends, neighbors, and social media contacts… anyone who had a heart and cared to listen. When word reached us that this woman had passed and her home was going into foreclosure, we had to act quickly to save the cats and figure out where their forever homes would be later.

We are so very happy to report that five of the kitties almost immediately found themselves going to a new forever home -- where they can stay together! This wonderful person is a good friend of Castaway and has helped us out in the past with a tough-to-place FeLV kitty. She knows there are no words to express our appreciation to her and our admiration of her for the amazing person she is.

The last remaining kitty turned out to be quite a bit younger than the others, and she currently is available for adoption at our shelter.  Her name is Joy because her person referred to her as 'her pride and joy'.  She is a gorgeous 4-year old calico with a sweet, gentle personality and very socialable with other cats.  Joy has been through a lot of change and would really benefit from being in a home again, even as a foster.

What would happen to your pets if you died in a car accident tomorrow?

The purpose of this story is to remind you - or perhaps enlighten you - of the circumstances that are going to arise in relation to your beloved pets when you pass, or when a family member of yours passes, if you don't take steps now to make arrangements.

Unwanted and Neglected No More!

The Castway volunteers involved in the actual rescue and rehabilitation of dogs and cats sometimes see neglect and cruelty at the extreme.  While we always try to focus our stories on the postitive aspects of rescue there are heartbreaks for us along the way.  Recently we rescued several animals suffering extreme neglect and starvation.  While there is good news and joyful recovery, the heartbreak is there also.

The hound was just bones with skin draped over.  She was found wandering the roads, a young dog with her that was obviously a pal she picked up along the way.  The pup was in good shape but the hound was only days from a miserable death by starvation.  After vetting, we learned she had no contributing health issues to explain her condition.  She was simply the victim of neglect.

Two kittens were taken in that were in skeletal condition.  They were about 7 weeks old and literally 'light as a feather'.  Obviously brothers and dependent on each other, both were put in a foster home and tended to constantly.  They were named ChowChow and DinDin because that's what they wanted and needed.  Sadly, after a week, DinDin died.  He was literally a skeleton.  ChowChow has survived but his progress is slow and it may take months to bring him back to a state of health.

These animals endured terrible suffering and many more are out there, unwanted and neglected; thrown away like trash.  We are only able to save a few of the many anonymous dogs and cats, puppies and kittens but each one saved is now a valued life to be loved and cared for.  You contributions make this possible!  Hopefully we will have 'after' pictures of these two survivors with happily ever-after stories, thanks to the many supporters of Castaway Critters.
